China & Chicken Wire

One of my favorite things to find is free furniture that can easily be restored.  But today's post is to show off a dear piece that was given to me by my buddy, Liz.  She was moving into her current home and this piece was left in there and she had no use for it.

It was love at first sight.  I have been holding onto it for about 2 months because I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it.  It has three sections, but only the left side still had glass.  When I looked into purchasing glass, it was going to be $200+ for the glass to be curved and installed.  That was a little above my price range.

While searching Pinterest to find another option, I stumbled upon a few cabinets that caught my eye.  I really liked the chicken wire as a cheap alternative.  Here's my inspiration:

I loaded up the kids and off to Home Depot we went.  I spent a whopping $30 on wire & cutting scissors.  The paint was already on-hand from a previous project.

I absolutely love this cabinet!  When my husband's father passed away, my husband inherited his dishes.  They have been stored in the garage for almost a year with no place to be displayed.

The inside of the cabinet was left alone.  I think that it has a nice contrast of both light and dark to it.

The outside was painted in white and lightly sanded by hand.  The chicken wire was painted white as well.  And what about that vintage, skeleton key?!

Here's another shot of before:

And after:

My father-in-law passed before I knew him.  It has been a joy combining our styles together to create this lovely piece of furniture.

  11. How sweet of your friend to let you have it and make it your own. I have a friend with French Antique armoires, and one of hers has chicken wire too. It's really a cool look. Glad you could make a home for your father in law's dishes. Sounds like the whole project has turned out well. Putting paint to something that size can be daunting, and you carried it out beautifully!
